- Thousands of commuters have been stranded at Caulfied station due to an incident on the Frankston line.
Trains from Caulfield have been suspended since 3.30pm after police received reports there was a man on a signal box near Glen Huntly station threatening self harm.
The man was reported on the signal gantry just after 3.30pm and trains were stopped immediately, some of them between stations. Replacement buses started running an hour and a half later, but according to Connex many buses were already deployed as school buses. Later on 26 buses were in use to ferry commuters.
Connex put a warning on its phone information service, warning commuters to expect delays.
Police have put out an alert to media warning them not to point cameras at the man who become agitated after an attempt to photograph him.
Connex has arranged buses to take passengers from Caulfield to Moorabbin, but is struggling to cope with the demand.
Connex spokesman Andrew Cassidy said commuters should expect delays to continue during peak hour on Friday morning. He said the length of delay meant that many trains would be out of position tonight and so morning services would be affected.
Mr Cassidy said the inconvenience would be shared "as equitably as possible" across all lines in the network.
"This could go on well into the night – we just can't run trains from Caulfield," he said.
"We are doing our best to organise more buses unfortunately people are going to have to make alternative arrangements."
Mr Cassidy said trains were running as normal between Moorabbin and Frankston.
He estimated thouands of commuters had been affected.
"The Frankston line carries up to 34,000 people a day. Certainly a large number have been disrupted."
A police spokeswoman confirmed police had been at the scene since about 4pm.
"There is a male on a signal box threatening self harm," the spokeswoman said.
"Police are doing their best to move people away from the area." | |
