| This was an item which was raised today in the Neil mitchel show on radio 3AW.
Should we make public transport 'free to all'. | |

| Hmmi dont think that will work, there would be a mass of overcrowding, and i dont think the system is ready for a 'free for all' surge. Only when the network is upgraded to a better state that it is can you then let everyone travel for free, cos at the moment it wont work.

| Well the fares collected dont make much of the revenue pie for funding trains, most of it comes from the government, if such a scheme were to happen, you wil find that advertising will make up a large part of it. You would see alot more advertising in trains and at stations. As the system becomes free, everyone will want to travel, and agencies will want to capitalise on it buy putting their product/serivce where it can be seen or heared.

| Uh. If we make transport free to all, then how does the govt. pay for gas and smeg. And then, with no gas, no trains can operate. Then you guys will have nothing to talk about =( How sad... [Edit: There is something to always talk about] [Corrected by Old man emu] | |

| Public transport being free for all is not going to increase patronage at all. Those who live nowhere near transport can't take advantage of it anyway! I know many people who live in Aspendale Gardens who wouldn't mind taking public transport IF it took them places. It will increase patronage, but not by far. A fare reduction would be more beneficial i would imagine. They are receiving more in fare collection now compared to when we had three zones. | |
